Serum samples from 240 common African black vulture (Pseudogyps africanus) from six municipalities in eastern Nigeria were examined for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by the modified direct agglutination test. As many as 136 vultures (64.8%) were positive for antibodies to T. gondii, with 1.5% at dilutions of 1:25, 5.9% at dilutions of 1:50, and 92.9% at dilutions of 1:500. These results indicate that vultures are good indicators of environmental contamination due to T. gondii infection.
