ABSTRACT
Cathetocephalus australis, parasite of Carcharhinus
brachyurus from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean is
redescribed. The specific quantitative characters of studied
specimens (body size, scolex length, proglottid size, number
of testes) are within the range given in Schmidt and
Beveridge's description of Cathetocephalus australis from
the southern Pacific Ocean. The studied cestode is considered
a representative of C. australis, belonging to a southwestern
Atlantic Ocean population. This is the first record of genus
Cathetocephalus in this region. The eggs of the species are
described for the first time and the geographical distribution
range of the species is provided.
