ABSTRACT

Several species of Oligochaeta from Estonian freshwaters were examined for the presence of actinosporean stages of Myxosporea. Three types of triactinomyxon were detected. Two types, isolated from Tubifex tubifex collected in Lake Peipsi and in the River Emajogi, closely resembled the actinospores of Myxobolus pseudodispar and M. macrocapsularis in shape and size. The third type of triactinospore was isolated from a laboratory culture of T. tubifex of Central Asian origin, maintained in aquaria at the Vortsjarv Limnological Station for more than 25 years and regularly supplied with mud from Lake Vortsjarv. The latter type differs from all triactinomyxon forms hitherto described. This is the first report on the occurrence of actinospores in Estonia.
